The rheumatology ultrasound clinic was set up in the Inverclyde Royal Hospital in 2007 with the purchase of the first departmental ultrasound scanner, Toshiba Xario, sponsored by the League of Hospital Friends. It was led by Dr Anna Ciechomska until 2013 and thereafter by Mrs Fiona Collins, Dr Mhairi Brandon and Dr Lisa Hutton.
In 2014 the two further ultrasound machines were purchased, and currently ultrasound service is provided also by Dr Jan Bunemann.
The scope of ultrasound practise includes:
- Diagnostic of inflammatory arthritis
- Guided injections
- Diagnostic of Giant Cell Arteritis

Dr Mhairi Brandon is Consultant Physiotherapist in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, certified with EFSUMB level 2 in musculoskeletal ultrasound. She has led innovative projects to develop advanced physiotherapy practitioners to implement Ambulatory Care Models. Dr Lisa Hutton
Dr Lisa Hutton in a Consultant Rheumatologist at Inverclyde Royal Hospital. She has many years experience in scanning inflammatory arthropathies for diagnostic purposes and developed GCA Fast Track pathway with application of ultrasound as a first line imaging modality.
