Centre for Rheumatic Diseases in Glasgow Royal Infirmary was the first rheumatology department in Scotland which utilised ultrasonography to diagnose inflammatory arthropaties. The ultrasound service has been established by Prof. David Kane (Dublin) and Prof. Peter Balint (Budapest) who developed Glasgow Ultrasound Scoring System (GUESS) here. The ultrasound service and teaching was subsequently led by Prof. Roger Sturrock and currently by Dr Anna Ciechomska and Dr Mhairi Brandon.
The scope of ultrasound diagnostic includes:
- Assessment of synovitis and enthesitis in inflammatory arthropathies
- Giant Cell Arteritis
- Nerve entrapments
- Musculoskeletal injuries
- Ultrasound guided procedures (aspirations, injections, needling, synovial biopsy)
Ultrasound scanner (Logiq E9) is located in a Rheumatology Day ward. The ultrasound clinic led by Dr Anna Ciechomska takes place on Wednesday morning.
The ultrasound examinations in the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases are also performed by Moira McDonald, Rheumatology Specialist Nurse, and by Lorraine Friel, Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner.
